Lip Blush vs. Tattoo Lipstick: What's the Difference?
Lip blush and old-school lip tattoos are not the same procedure. Here is a clear, editor-written guide to what each one does, how they heal, and how to choose the shade that actually suits you.
What healing really looks like
Almost every PMU regret post online has the same hidden problem: the photo was taken too early. Healing is not linear, and the three-day version of your brows or lips is not the final result. Understanding what each week does to the pigment will save you from a panic text to your artist on day five.
This timeline applies to microblading, powder brows, lip blush, and eyeliner. Beauty marks heal faster, usually within a single week.
Day 0 — Procedure day
Color is dramatic, edges are crisp, and the area is slightly swollen. You may feel tender for the rest of the day. This is not the color you will keep — expect it to look around thirty to forty percent darker than the final tone.
Days 1 to 3 — Settling
The area looks its darkest. Slight scabbing may form, especially with microbladed strokes. Do not pick, do not soak in water, and keep the area dry. Apply the aftercare ointment your artist prescribed in a thin layer.
Days 4 to 10 — The scab phase
Itching, flaking, and visible peeling are normal. The pigment can look patchy and uneven. This is the stage where most clients spiral. Resist the urge to panic-text the artist. The skin is shedding the top layer of pigment to reveal the settled color beneath, which will look lighter and softer.
Days 11 to 21 — The ghost phase
Around day twelve, you may swear the color has disappeared entirely. It has not. Fresh skin has formed over the pigment and is temporarily masking it. This is the most-questioned stage of the entire healing process and the one that produces the most unnecessary anxiety.
Weeks 4 to 6 — Bloom
The color resurfaces and the final tone reveals itself. This is when you can finally assess shape, density, and saturation honestly. Most artists schedule a touch-up at the six-to-eight week mark to refine anything that healed unevenly.
Month 3 to month 18 — The long view
PMU fades gradually. Lip blush typically lasts two to three years. Microblading lasts twelve to eighteen months. Powder brows and eyeliner can hold for two to three years. Lifestyle factors (sun exposure, exfoliating acids, oily skin) shorten the timeline. An annual color refresh keeps the result looking intentional rather than faded.
Aftercare non-negotiables
- No swimming, saunas, or steam for fourteen days
- No retinol, glycolic, or salicylic acid near the treated area for thirty days
- Daily SPF on the area for the life of the pigment
- Sleep on your back for the first three nights if possible
- No facials, microneedling, or chemical peels for thirty days
